SOUTH FLORIDA’S POPULARITY EXPLOSION from the 1980s through the early 2000s birthed a proliferation of suburban developments, strip malls, and— thanks to its status as the warmest corner of the Sunshine State—golf courses. Every self-respecting developer was lining up to lobby the link architect du jour; Raymond Floyd, Pete Dye, and the immortal Jack Niklaus. Over the ensuing years, South Florida—Palm Beach County in particular—became the land of 1,000 clubhouses.
